Auctioneer’s Report (Stephen Dennis):

Auctioneer’s Report (Stephen Dennis): A wonderful show of well presented lambs for which breeders should be congratulated and which was a fair reflection of the year by year improvement of the Bentham sale which is now recognised as a centre for top quality stock. Plenty of enthusiasm for the top pens with a number being bought with next year’s Summer show season in mind. The top four prize pens all made £200 or more with the winning pen from David & Robin Booth of Feizor topping the sale at £280/head going home with pre-sale judge Julie Brough, Wigton. (Look out this Saturday for the Booth’s Blue Faced Leicester Rams including their total annual consignment of shearlings). David Buck of Barnard Castle paid £230 for Stephen & Samantha Fawcett’s 2nd prize pen whilst 1st time vendor James Huck of Austwick returned £200 for his 3rd prize pen to local farmer, Robert Butterfield. The 4th prize pen from James & Simon Garth headed an impressive run of 500 lambs from Birk Knott also making £200 purchased by E Watts of Pooley Bridge, Penrith. John Huddleston of Ravenscar once again had an impressive run and took 5th prize selling to shearling winner Brian Lawson for £155. A slow start to the sale with trade improving as noted runs were followed by old customers and which generally held at the same rates right to the close at 5.30pm. Many thanks to the yard staff who managed to ensure smooth running on a hectic day. Similarly the office girls once again provided an excellent service perhaps fuelled by the celebrations of Sarah’s 40th which inspired a tuneful rendition of “Happy Birthday” from an enthusiastic audience of buyers and sellers.
