Auctioneer’s Report (Will Alexander):

Auctioneer’s Report (Will Alexander): As anticipated there was a good buzz throughout the dairy shippons and around the pre-sale show ring for the Christmas Dairy Sale. Judges David Coulthurst, Goosnargh & Tony Hunter, Penrith tackled all 7 classes with ease. Strong entries in all classes led to a tough championship, but after little deliberation, 1st place Pedigree Cow from Edward & Angela Booth of Wigglesworth was tapped out as Champion, followed by 1st place Commercial Cow from George & David Whitwell, Austwick as Reserve. A packed ringside of both regular buyers and new faces to Bentham led to a fast trade, the champion of the day taking the top spot at £2400, second calver “Hallcroft Tyro Brenma” was sold 4weeks calved giving 47litres and headed south with judge David Coulthurst. David also snapped up the reserve champion at £2150, she was another 2nd calver, 18days calved and yielding 34litres. All cows were well sought after, 4 over £2000, with all bar one over £1920, averaging £1980. Some lovely heifers forward, where more of the best could have easily been sold. Dave Martin’s 1st place Pedigree Heifer “Lordsplain Applicable Sapphira” was close behind the champion’s price at £2380, heading into Cumbria with Brian Nelson, Heversham. The Whitwells & Booths were also in the top spots with their heifers at £2250 & £2200 respectively. Any amount of both the pedigree and commercial types, £1900+, others £1700-£1900 with all 31 heifers forward averaging £1727. A couple of in-calf heifers from the Duncan Family finished the sale, realising £1220 & £1200. Thanks go to both our judges, especially Tony for stepping in after a last minute cancellation and all of the day’s show sponsors.
