Auctioneer’s Report (Greg MacDougall): What can only be described as a marvellous show of suckled calves with some claiming the best ever seen in Bentham. Some real quality on offer saw all classes sell to full value and much sharper on the year with a packed ringside of buyers in attendance with several heading to new homes in Anglesey, Lincoln and Buckinghamshire with the usual strong continent from the local area. Judging was in the capable hands of Peter Fox, Clitheroe who we thank for his time and expertise. First time vendors AC & EO Dent, Barnard Castle took both Champion and Reserve tickets with a smart Lim x heifer to £1020 with their Reserve steer to £1000. Taking 1st prize in the bull class was regular vendors JM & JJ Dawson, Fieldhead. Their Lim x bull realised £1100 with a stronger sort from the same home taking 2nd prize making £1220 (see full results separate). Away from the show, best bull calves met with some strong competition with plenty between £1000-£1150. Something a bit younger but still flashy £900-£1000. Without doubt, one of the highlights of the sale was a run of 57 Simmental and Limousin steers and heifers from Fishwick Farms. Year on year now, cattle from this consignment are well sought after with an impressive overall average of £917 achieved (+ £124 on the year) with 13 selling at £1000 or more and topping at £1120. A real credit to the vendors and a joy to sell. Steer calves, especially well grown types selling well over £900 with a Lim x from Frankland Farms to £1080 and PD Pye close behind at £1060. D Eames, Abbeystead also enjoyed a brisk trade with Charollais to £1020. Younger types in the £800s with those not off a creep or slightly more commercial £620-£720.Smart butcher type heifers and those fit for future breeding purposes also very well sought after. A quality Limousin from K & GJ Huck, Austwick topped the day’s sale at £1400 with others to £1350. Frankland Farms’ nice run of BB x sold to £950. Good growy commercial sorts and smarter types £850-£900+ with younger sorts £750+ and a few plainer types in the £600s.
