Auctioneer’s Report (Greg MacDougall): Just short of 300 cattle forward. All classes dearer on the month with plenty of age on offer. Included in the entry was the annual consignment of Lim x/ BB x bulling heifers from J & I Whitaker taking the Champion rosette and the Bentham Perpetual Challenge Trophy going on to make £1650 purchased by Nick & Charlotte Brown, Claughton for future breeding purposes. Also, a superb run of 25 3/4 bred Limousin bulling heifers from WA Ketley & Son, Colchester outlaid all winter and showing all the attributes of cow makers, they topped at £1600 to average £1373. Strong cattle in forward condition meeting with electric rates. A smart Limousin steer from J & A Lawson & Son, High Threaber topped the day’s sale at £1800 with others from the same home to £1660. P & JM Wilson, Westhouse to £1630 and £1600. Plenty of other strong cattle £1400+. Long term feeding cattle often £1150-£1250 with the best grazing types around £1000+. A pen of 5 Charolais steers 10mo from JM Knowles, East View to £1100 with Limousins from PJ Allonby to £1170. The Broadbent family taking all the prizes in the Junior Steer Class went on to make £1250 for the best from this consignment. B + W once again selling to full value with more on offer this month. A huge steer from local farmers ME & B Mason & Son, Oxenforth Green topped the section at £1320. Trade in general £900+ with 16 traditional Friesian types from Messrs Livesey to £800. A strong trade throughout with cattle required on 15th March as well as the next sale for strong cattle on April 5th.
