Auctioneer’s Report: Greg MacDougall : Without doubt the highlight of Wednesday night’s sale was the Annual Show & Sale of Short Wooled Prime Lambs ably judged by Mr Andrew Atkinson, Harrogate. This year’s champion pen came from regular Bentham supporters, the Whitaker family of Bowsber with 5 cracking Beltex lambs scaling 43kg realising £150 purchased by James Blenkhorn on behalf of Yorkshire Halal, Ossett. Winning the Suffolk and Charollais classes was CD Timm of York with their well presented pens later selling for £106, £100 (see all show results separate). Thanks must go to all vendors, the sponsors and Andrew Atkinson for his time and expertise. Away from the show, a slightly reduced entry saw all classes sell at similar rates with averages showing an increase with a final result of 189p (SQQ 190.7p). Best bred lambs forward in larger numbers with plenty of pens selling between 220p-290p topping at 303.6p or £127.50 from MB Townley. Another nice run of lambs from M Wynne, Padfield topped at 285.2p or £125.50. Commercial export lambs either side of 190p with nicer pens 200-215p. A special mention must go to John Taylor of Lots House Farm, Brookhouse, showing his last consignment of lambs before handing over the reins to his daughter Lynn. A well presented run of 329 mainly Continental handy and lightweight lambs topped at £87.50. Good luck in the future John! Heavy butcher type lambs (55kg+) selling between £95-£110. Those weighing 45kg-50kg £82-£92 depending on quality. Best fleshy Horned lambs 170p-180p topping at £83.50 or 185.6p for SBF from last week’s Champion home, AA & HM Capstick. Lightweights around £20 over their kilo weight. Handy weight Mules 180p-185p with the heavier end £85-£88. Vendors are encouraged to keep drawing lambs only if they are well fleshed to maximise their returns.
