Auctioneer’s Report (Greg MacDougall): Nearly 4000 prime hoggs forward with trade up another level. Plenty of competition ring side with buyers all vying to ensure numbers. Overall average 226.4p (SQQ 233.4p). A highlight of the night’s sale was the “Super Two Challenge” with judging in the capable hands of Morgan Helliwell. Local lad Chris Hewitt took top honours with two fantastic Beltex hoggs scaling 47kg realising £150 (319p) purchased by the judge. A Rigby, Slaidburn took 2nd with his lambs making £145 while the third prize hoggs, two black Beltex gimmers from M Williams of Rhuddon made £152 going on for future breeding. Overall, a great show of quality on offer, a credit to all vendors. Away from the show, best bred hoggs sold between 260p-300p with a notch down making between 240p-250p. Hoggs weighing 45kg-50kg £105-£120 with a few heavier sorts £120+. Handy weight Mules 225p-235p with heaver pens (45kg-50kg) £105-£108. Nicer horned hoggs to 243.2p for Dalesbred with Lonks topping per head at £107.50. Lightweights in strong demand with nicer sorts in general 250p-290p topping at 348.6p from R Garth with horned hoggs topping at 245p for a pen of SBF from WJ Coltherd, Selkirk.
