Auctioneer’s Report (Dennis): A much better sale than was anticipated with a busy ringside including a strong contingent of buyers from the Midlands and Eastern Counties. Tom and Ian Sedgewick’s consignment were first into the ring. The recent success of their Gallaber Herd of Pedigree Limousins being awarded Best Intermediate Herd in the NW Limousin Competition created plenty of pre-sale interest. Their 8 1/2 year old bull (Gallaber Golden Boy) sold above expectations at £2050 to TH Harrison of Shap. However, the first of their maiden heifers was the star of the show. “Gallaber Ovation” at 19mo and sired by the aforementioned Gallaber Golden Boy out of Gallaber Lacoste was finally knocked down at £3000 to Turner Farms of Henley, Huddersfield. Similar aged heifers sired by Tallyrock Mac sold to £1700 twice and to £1680 for daughters of Gallaber Leo and Lodge Hamlet. Their run of eleven registered heifers averaging £1678 (up £192 on the year). The strong trade continued into the in calf section where the annual consignment from John and Jean Bradley topped at £2220 for a Limousin x heifer due January to the Blonde bull followed by a BB x heifer due December to the Limousin selling for £2200. Their consignment averaged £1995 (up £124 on the year). Andrew Haggas once again showed a run of strong heifers mostly due January to the Limousin bull topping at £1750 to average £1467 (down on the year -£40). A consignment of 48 Limousin x Holstein heifers due February– April were consigned by Messrs Ketley from Essex which sold to a top of £1300 with an average of £1053 leaving neither buyer nor seller feeling hard done to. Other locally consigned heifers generally returned prices of £1200-£1400 with some smaller hillbred sorts between £800-£1000. Cows and calves finished the sale with Fishwick Farms topping at £1400. Others generally between £1000-£1300, at or above expectations.
